Blackstone Fortress: The Dreaded Ambull

Work has finished on the final pieces for Blackstone Fortress, the Dreaded Ambull expansion.  It was a lot of fun working on a big beastie after doing lots of infantry sized miniatures and I mainly used layers of dry brushing and washes with final highlights to pick out the details, so nice and quick to paint but effective looking for the table top.

Blackstone Fortress: Obsidius Mallex and Bodyguard

Time for the final miniatures from Black Fortress and I've been looking forward to working on these as Black Legion are my main army in 40K.

Being the "Big Boss" for Blackstone Fortress and also doubling as a Lord for my 40k army I wanted to paint Obsidius to a good standard, spending time on layering and highlights etc.  I'm very happy with how he turned out, particularly his face where I used a thinned down purple wash rather than a standard flesh colour to give him that taint of Chaos feel.

The bodyguards were a test run for me to see how quickly I could get some standard Chaos Marines painted up as I have quite a back log in the wings, to this end they were painted to a very basic table top standard (base coats, dry brushing, washes and the odd highlight) but I think they strike a good balance of quality to speed so I'll be forging ahead with this scheme once I start on the army proper.

Next up, and already built and undercoating, is the Dreaded Ambull from the first expansion!

Blackstone Fortress: Explorers

I've spent the last month or so painting up the explorers for Blackstone Fortress and as we're actively playing this now (about to undertake our first stronghold) it's lit a bit of a fire under me so they've progressed at a decent pace.
With these being centre piece characters I wanted to push myself with these and for the most part I'm very happy with the results.  As usual I've based these so they'll match up with the rest of my upcoming 40k minis as they undoubtedly see some use there as well.

Quite the motley crew

Blackstone Fortress: Minions

Well it's been far too long since my last post but all has not been quiet on the painting table, I've been busying away trying to get Blackstone Fortress painted up so that we can get cracking on playing the game (something we've really been looking forward to).  To that end these are simple table top standard paint jobs, just base coats, washes and some dry brushing where required.  They aren't going to win any awards but will look decent enough on the table.

The first thing I wanted to tackle were the minions, leaving the characters till the end, so I started with the Traitor Guard.  For the game you need to be able to distinguish between the two groups so instead of painting the base rims I decided on two different colour schemes.

With the Beastmen I wanted these to look like they worked with the Traitor Guard so kept the colour palette the same.

Next up were the Negavolt Cultists, I wanted these to really stand out as something different and decided to go with a Borg-like skin tone which I though worked quite well as a counterpoint to the glowing energy core on their backs.

For the Ur-Ghuls I did the simplest of paint jobs (two layers of drybrushing and then a couple of washes) but I'm really happy with how they turned out, so much so I think this is how I'll be painting my Nightstalkers for Kings Of War Vanguard.

The last group of minions are the Spindle Drones, part of the Blackstone Fortress itself so again I wanted these to be set apart in how they look so went with a very bright silver and turquoise scheme.

Finally (and fresh off the painting table) are the Rogue Psykers.  As these are sort of leader models I put a little more time into their skin tones so they stand out a little more but I also wanted to test out how I plan to paint skin tones for my Black Legion.

So that's all the minions painted up which means it's time to move on to the characters and I'll be tackling Rein and Raus first.
