Terminator: Rise of the Resistance and Fall of Skynet

Continuing on with painting the rest of my Terminator collection it was time to start work on the board games; Rise of the Resistance and Fall of Skynet.

As most of the miniatures are replicas of or based on many of the resin miniatures I have already painted I thought I would try something a little different for the photos this time and attempt some staged action shots.

Though by no means perfect I think they manage to do a decent job of showing the miniatures off in a slightly more interested way and I may well play around with this concept in the future.

As for the miniatures themselves, they are very much board game miniatures.  Softer details and bendy plastic are the order of the day but once you get them painted up they don't look half bad and mix in with they plastic and resin miniatures of the skirmish game quite well (they are ever so slightly smaller in scale).

Now that the miniatures are painted the board games have been queued up as our next to play through after we finish up with our current Kingdom Death campaign.  Game play looks similar to Blackstone Fortress but hopefully more challenging.

With all of my Terminator miniatures now complete is time to move on, or should I say back to, another project and will the launch of the 10th edition of Warhammer 40k I can here the Black Legion calling!

Terminator Miniature Game: Expansion Minis

As I make my way through the rather large backlog of miniatures it was time to finish off Terminator: Genisys.  Love or hate the film it did produce a great range of miniatures and a game from River Horse Games.  I painted up all of the future war miniatures previously but hadn't touched 1984 onward (yet the most iconic characters are all present here).

For painting I used the technique I started with the Hellboy miniatures; a black prime with an over spray of gray and a dry brush of off white, then a mix of contrast/speed paints were used in conjunction with standard acrylic and metallic paints (so a spin on what is now universally know as slap chop).
I find that this way of painting still produces good results for tabletop standard while being faster to achieve than the traditional base coat/wash/highlight method.

Next up on the painting are the Terminator: Rise Of The Resistance miniatures seeing as I'm on a roll.

I'll be back...

Kickstarter Spotlight: Terminator Genisys: Rise of the Resistance

A new Terminator board game has just launched on Kickstarter and is being published by River Horse under their current license and developed by Lynnvander Studios.  It is set just prior to the first 15 minutes of Terminator: Genysis and includes the characters from that film.  Now I know most people didn't like the film or the characters portrayals however a Terminator is a Terminator and I'll take any chance to play around in that world... cue that theme song.

Skynet's secret weapon and also a one time medical practitioner

One of the major draws for me is that the miniatures are compatible with the existing table top game from River Horse so I'll be expanding that game in a major way (Matt Smith and Arnie sculpts in Resistance gear along with a ton of Termies) as well as having what looks like a cool board game/dungeon crawler.

Terminator Minatures Game - John Connor and Lt

Before taking a break from Terminator to work on some things for Lord Of The Rings I wanted to finish up the troops for the future war and this meant working on the top man himself, John Connor (and his Lt who is a generic character for the game but can be used to lead the LA assault against Skynet, a scenario from the rule book).

As usual for character miniatures I tried to put a bit more into them then the standard soldiers, particularly in John Connors case.  So with the joys of modern technology I pulled up a shot of him from the film on my phone and did my best to replicate the scarring on his face.  This is the resin version of the miniature and again is was a real joy to paint, lots of crisp detail.

The Lt miniature is a metal cast and lacks the crispness of the Connor miniature but still looks okay when put against the rest of the range.  I did struggle with his face somewhat as it was very rounded so I had to paint the facial features on him but in the end I think he turned out alright.

I still have quite a bit of Terminator stuff to work on (the 1984 set, quite a few versions of Arnie and then the big walker) but with the arrival of my Gundabad Orc army from the painter I'm going to work on their bases and unit bases before moving on to my Fallen Dwarves.

Resistance Soldier Specialists - Terminator Genisys

More Terminator from me now as I finish up on my Resistance soldiers with the specialists:

Again these were a joy to work on, they're so detailed that they virtually paint themselves.  Here's some close up of the individuals, again these are just to a table top standard but even so the sculpts shine through:

A dog handler for detecting those pesky infiltrators

S.A.W.

LAW

Mortar

Loader

One thing I forgot to mention previously is just how many extras you get with these kits in the form of heads/weapons/arms etc, you really can go to town with these guys:

That's it for the soldiers and next up I'll be working on John Connor and a LT to add some much needed command structure.  Beyond that I'll be moving back to possibly one of my favourite armies to work on, the Fallen Dwarves, as Anvil Industries are releasing some new miniatures for Miniatures Of The North.

If you're reading this you are the Resistance - Terminator Genisys

I've just finished my next batch of miniatures for the Terminator: Genisys miniatures game, namely the resin Resistance soldiers.  These are fantastic miniatures with so much detail and though I've only done them to a table top level you could really go to town on them.

Two soldiers caught during their cigarette break

Time to even the odds against the Terminators

Some of the great poses you can make from the miniatures

Two men willing to do whatever it takes to bring down Skynet

Now for a nice option that comes on the sprue, Terminator Infiltrator heads (so the Resistance don't get all the love)

Though I do have more Terminator miniatures to go through I'm going to have a break from these and put together something I've been waiting for, Tevari Tala Riders from Macrocosm miniatures which will be joining my 2nd Ed 40k Eldar army and Exodite Dragon Knight Riders.
Here's a sneak peak of them on my desk at the moment.

Lastly it will be Salute this coming weekend, something we've always wanted to go to but it's always been difficult to attend.  Well not this year, in a last minute decision we've decided to drive there and back on the day making an 8 hours journey overall, hardly ideal and possible slightly nuts but we'll have all of Sunday to recover and it should be well worth it.

Until next time...

Terminators: T-800's, T-1000 and Infiltrators (oh my!)

It's been quite some time since I've picked up a brush and painted anything so I was a little worried I might be a tad rusty when it came to paint up these miniatures (I love the sculpts by the way) however much like riding a bike I soon got into the swing of things, barring the odd wobbly line here and there.

 Command and Special Weapon T-800s

Heavy Weapon T-800s

Prototype (T-600s) Infiltrators - the one on the left is metal while the one on the right is resin

T-1000 - I had a lot of fun painting this one, I kept the scheme the same as my Resistance fighters and then painted in the Mimetic Polyalloy.  I think the blending on the arm worked really well on this one and to give all the metal parts that chrome look I gave them a coat of varnish to give them a shine (this goes for all the T-800s as well).

A final group shot

I've now started work on the resin resistance fighters (again great sculpts) so will hopefully have some images of those soon.
